Quick answer: when the game gets stuck compiling shaders

If Warhounds does not start because it stops during shader compilation, the developer’s October 8, 2026 Hotfix #8 announcement provides a specific Steam workaround: open Steam Library → Warhounds → Properties → General → Launch Options and enter:

--skipShaderWarmUp

Try launching the game again. Only use this option if startup shader compilation is blocking you. The developer warns that skipping shader warmup may cause in-game stutters, so it is not a general FPS boost or a recommended default for players whose games already launch. The developer is still working on a permanent solution.

This guide separates three things: the released Hotfix #8 launch option, the experimental October 2 Unstable branch, and unrelated launch/crash problems whose cause has not been identified. None is a guaranteed fix for every black screen, loading hang, or GPU.

How to apply the official Hotfix #8 option on Steam

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click Warhounds and choose Properties.
  3. Under General, locate Launch Options.
  4. Enter exactly --skipShaderWarmUp (two leading hyphens; no quotation marks).
  5. Close Properties and start Warhounds from Steam.
  6. If the game launches, check actual mission and camera performance rather than assuming the issue is completely resolved.

The October 8 announcement describes the option for players whose game fails to launch at shader compilation. It does not say that all launch screens, loading transitions, driver crashes, or mission freezes share that cause.

Remove the option when it is no longer needed: return to the same Steam Launch Options box, delete --skipShaderWarmUp, and start again. If you are comparing results, change one factor at a time and record which configuration was used.

A different path: October 2 experimental shader branch

On October 2, the developer acknowledged that shader compilation problems were affecting some players and said they were frequently related to AMD graphics cards. The studio published a test change to a Steam Unstable branch named shaders_warmup_fix and requested feedback from affected players.

To follow that experimental path (not a general recommendation):

  1. In Steam Library, open Warhounds → Properties.
  2. Open the Game Versions & Betas section named in the developer announcement.
  3. Select the shaders_warmup_fix test branch, if it is still offered.
  4. Let Steam download the branch update, then test and record the result.
  5. Return to the normal/public branch after testing, unless you intentionally want to remain on a test build.

The Hotfix #8 option is a separate released bypass, not proof that the test branch was merged into the stable release. Do not combine multiple workarounds during the first controlled test: doing so makes it harder to identify what changed the result.

Is the problem caused by an AMD CPU, AMD GPU, or insufficient hardware?

The developer’s October 2 statement identifies a correlation with AMD graphics cards, not with AMD processors in general. An AMD Ryzen CPU does not establish that a shader problem is the same bug, and neither does the presence of a particular GPU prove the game will or will not start.

Check your actual graphics adapter in Windows first. The published minimum Windows PC graphics requirement is GeForce GTX 1070 Ti or Radeon RX 5700, with 8 GB VRAM. The recommended graphics are RTX 3070 or Radeon RX 6800. These are store specifications, not Warhounds.org benchmarks. A device below the stated minimum is outside the advertised baseline; the Hotfix #8 launch option does not waive system requirements.

If you have only integrated graphics, record that fact instead of assuming the shader workaround can replace a dedicated GPU. For platform specs and Steam Deck status, see Warhounds system requirements.

What to check if it still will not launch

  • Confirm the symptom. Does Warhounds explicitly show shader compilation, hang on an initial loading screen, crash to desktop, or fail only when entering a mission? Different transitions do not prove the same underlying cause.
  • Check the installed build. Allow Steam updates to finish and record the version/build or latest patch context. If the problem is not clearly at shader compilation, do not start by forcing the skip option.
  • Verify game files. In Steam Properties, use the platform’s installed-file verification feature. Do not delete game data, shader folders, or saves based on an unverified forum suggestion.
  • Record the GPU and driver. Note the exact GPU model, whether it is discrete or integrated, the driver version, Windows version, and relevant error messages. Use official vendor/Windows channels for driver information rather than downloading unknown replacement files.
  • Test one variable at a time. Compare normal launch versus the official launch parameter on the same machine. If choosing the Unstable branch, record that branch separately.
  • Preserve saves. Before experimenting with builds, see the save backup guide. Do not overwrite the only save that reproduces a different issue.
  • Report a reproducible case. Send the build, GPU, driver, launch stage and before/after result to the developer via the official Steam community.

Steam-specific caveat: these menu steps and launch-parameter instructions come from a Steam announcement. Warhounds is also listed on Epic and GOG, but this site has not verified how the identical flag behaves when launched through those storefronts. Do not present the Steam path as an official Epic/GOG procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Will --skipShaderWarmUp improve performance?

It is not a performance preset. The developer warns that using it without a shader compilation problem can cause in-game stutters. Its stated purpose is to bypass a blocked startup stage.

Has Hotfix #8 permanently fixed shader compilation?

No permanent fix was announced in the October 8 notice. Hotfix #8 provides a bypass for affected launches while the developer continues working on a system solution. Independent success rates across GPUs are not established here.

Does the issue affect every AMD graphics card?

No such claim was made. The developer said affected players were frequently using AMD graphics cards. The exact affected models, drivers and prevalence are unverified.

Meeting advertised requirements does not guarantee a bug-free launch. Record the actual loading stage, build and driver; try the narrow, official Steam launch option only if the stall is at shader compilation. If it fails, provide that result when reporting the problem, rather than continuing with unrelated unverified fixes.
